Scholarship Program
The Packaging & Label Gravure Association (PLGA) is a non-profit educational association with emphasis on the Rotogravure printing process. In 2003, the PLGA’s Board of Directors approved the establishment of an Educational Scholarship Committee to begin providing $2,000.00 scholarships to needy students at colleges and universities with Graphic Arts Programs.

The first scholarship was presented to Clemson University out of PLGA’s general funds in 2003. No conditions were attached to the scholarship except that it would be presented to a needy student in the university’s Graphic Arts curriculum. The selection of the student was done by the university’s Graphic Arts Department.

In order to continue and to expand this scholarship project, a request for designated funds was requested of the PLGA membership. Some $15,000.00 was received and more promised if the PLGA would establish an independent Educational Foundation. The PLGA’s Board of Directors agreed that this was definitely necessary and established the Packaging & Label Gravure Association, Inc. as an independent tax exempt 500 (c) (3) public charity.

Note:
In 2004, three scholarships were awarded, one each to Clemson University, Western Michigan University and Pittsburg State University. In 2005, four scholarships were awarded, one each to Clemson University, Western Michigan University, Pittsburg State University, and Rochester Institute of Technology.

On March 16, 2006, the Packaging & Label Gravure Educational Foundation, Inc. received approval from the IRS: “We are pleased to inform you that upon review of your application for tax exempt status we have determined that you (the Packaging & Label Gravure Educational Foundation, Inc.) are exempt from Federal income tax under section 501 (c) (3) of the internal revenue code. Contributions to you are deductible under section 170 of the Code. You are also qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers or gifts under section 2055, 2106 or 2522 of the Code.

Educational Grants Program
The second area of emphasis for the PLGA Educational Foundation, Inc. is to provide “Educational Grants” to upper division and graduate students in colleges, universities and trade schools with qualified Graphic Arts Programs. The grants will be awarded for the purpose of short term (3-4 months) long projects designed to answer specific technical or process questions related to the gravure printing process e.g. Nano technology and its probable impact on next generation inks, coating and substrates. It is expected that a student, with supervision by the appropriate professor or instructor, will produce a report for publication and dissemination to the Gravure Packaging and Label Industry and presented at an upcoming PLGA Global conference. The dollar amount of each grant will vary from $5,000 to $15,000, depending on the breadth and depth of the project, desired outcomes and converter/supplier participation.
